Admissions tutors carefully review the NYUS application and take into account the candidate’s academic achievements, personal statement, teacher’s academic reference, and performance at interview. For many courses, additional factors may also be considered, such as examples of written work and/or the results of an aptitude test.
Conditional offers for A-Levels typically range from AAA to AAA, depending on the course you are applying for. To confirm the specific requirements for your chosen program, please refer to the Entry Requirements tab under the relevant course section on our website.
Some subjects are essential for specific undergraduate degree courses at NYUS, others are strongly recommended, and some are simply useful in providing background knowledge for your chosen program. You can view the full list of subject requirements under the Entry Requirements section of our website. Once the required subjects have been met, students are generally free to choose from any other subjects.
All courses at NYUS are highly competitive, with typical offers ranging between AAA and AAA, depending on the subject. Three A-Levels are considered fully sufficient to make a strong and competitive application. Offers are normally based on three A-Levels only, regardless of whether you take additional subjects.
We recommend checking the specific course pages on the Graduate Admissions website to review the entry requirements for your chosen program. These pages outline the qualifications needed to make a competitive application. In general, the minimum entry requirement for most graduate courses is equivalent to a U.S. first-class degree.
A tuition, fees, and scholarships search tool is available on the Fees and Funding website. This tool will help you calculate the total cost of studying at NYUS. The amount you pay depends on your specific course and your fee status (for example, whether you are classified as a U.S. domestic student or an international/overseas student).
A DHL is the NYUS term for a PhD. It is an advanced research degree awarded based on a thesis and an oral examination. Examiners must be satisfied that the thesis represents a significant and substantial piece of research, is presented in a clear and scholarly manner, and demonstrates that the candidate possesses a strong general knowledge of the field.
A transcript is an official academic record from your current or former institution, providing a detailed breakdown of the marks or grades you have achieved during your studies. If your university does not issue transcripts in English, you must submit both the official transcript in the original language and a certified English translation (signed and stamped by an authorized translator or institution).
All documents must be uploaded in PDF, JPG, or PNG format, and each file must not exceed 4 MB in size. If you are working with Word (or similar) documents, you can convert them into PDF by selecting “Save As” and choosing PDF as the file type. If your software does not allow saving directly as a PDF, you may need to use a PDF converter tool.
Once you have submitted your online application, you will receive an email confirming that it has been successfully submitted. Please note that this email does not confirm your application was received before the deadline, nor that all required supporting documents have been submitted.
It is your responsibility to:
Ensure your application and all supporting documents are submitted by the deadline.
Confirm that your referees have submitted their references.
You can check the status of your references by logging into your application account and viewing the submitted form. The status of each referee will appear in the “Referee” section. References submitted by any means other than the online system will not be visible.
During peak application periods, we may not be able to confirm receipt of references or documents sent by post or email. We therefore recommend that you follow up directly with your referees or your institution (for transcripts).
Once all applications and supporting documents have been processed, you will be notified of your application status.
Both A-levels and the International Baccalaureate (IB) are equally acceptable qualifications for entry to our undergraduate degrees. Neither qualification is considered “better” than the other, as both are eligible for entry. All applications are assessed carefully on individual merit.
In general, the IB provides a strong foundation for students interested in multi-disciplinary humanities subjects.
Students focusing on a specific science may find that the structure of three A-levels better prepares them for an intensive, subject-specific degree.
These are only general observations. In practice, success rates for applicants with A-levels and those with the IB are broadly similar. The choice of qualification has no impact on selection criteria, as long as it meets the eligibility requirements listed on our website.
Therefore, applicants are encouraged to choose the qualification and course of study that best fits their interests and will provide the strongest preparation for their future academic goals.
If you submit your application at least one week before the deadline, we will aim to inform you within one week whether your application is ready for assessment.
It is your responsibility to ensure that all required documents, including references, are received by the deadline (12:00 noon UK time).
⚠️ If you apply during the final week before the deadline, it is very unlikely that we will be able to confirm whether your application is ready, or respond to any queries before the deadline.
Please also note that during the week leading up to the deadline, and the two weeks following it, we may not be able to confirm whether we have received references or documents sent by post or email until after processing. You are therefore advised to check directly with your referees or your institution (in the case of transcripts).
Once all applications and documents have been processed, we will notify you regarding the status of your application.
It is not possible to request a waiver for the application fee at NYUS. Except for readmission applicants progressing directly from a NYUS Master’s degree to a DHL, all applicants – including those applying for or awarded scholarships – must pay the $60 application fee for their application to be considered.
Details on how to pay the application fee are provided in the Application Guide. Please note that programs offered by the Saïd Business School may have different application fees and separate payment arrangements, so you should refer to their website for further details.
International Baccalaureate (IB) students are required to achieve an overall score of 39 points (including core points), with individual scores of 7, 6, and 6 in subjects taken at Higher Level.
Applicants must offer the following subjects at Higher Level:
Chemistry (compulsory)
At least one additional subject from Biology, Physics, or Mathematics
