How to Obtain a Student Visa

To study at NYUS, international students are required to obtain a valid student visa (F-1 Classification).
The process begins in your home country, where you must apply for and receive the student visa before traveling to the United States.

The Office of International Student Services at NYUS will guide and support you throughout the entire process, including:

  • Providing the necessary admission and visa documents (such as the Form I-20).

  • Assisting with instructions for scheduling your visa interview at the U.S. Embassy or Consulate.

  • Offering guidance on required financial documentation and supporting materials.

  • Answering your questions to ensure a smooth transition to NYUS.

STEP ONE

  • Obtain the International Student Services Information Packet (online, email, or mail).

  • Fill out the Student Application Form:

    • Provide your home country address and, if available, your U.S. address during studies.

    • Include your country of birth, citizenship, gender, and date of birth.

    • State your program of study.

    • Indicate your purpose for the I-20 certificate (choose one):
      a) Initial attendance (if applying from outside the U.S.)
      b) Change of status applicant
      c) Transfer student
      d) Reinstatement

    • Provide your highest level of completed education.

    • Include emergency contact details and sign your application.

STEP TWO

  • Submit a clear copy of your passport ID page.

  • Provide financial evidence showing you or your sponsor have sufficient funds (minimum $18,000 USD).

    • If the bank statement is in your own name, skip affidavit.

    • If it is from a sponsor, they must:

      • Complete an Affidavit of Support (if U.S. citizen/permanent resident), OR

      • Complete NYUS Financial Affirmation Form (if overseas).

  • Pay the $100 Application Fee for the Intensive English Program (IEP).

  • Pay the SEVIS Fee (Form I-901) – $200 USD.

  • Submit copies of:

    • High school diploma and transcript (in English).

    • Immunization certificate from your home country (or complete the immunization process in the U.S. upon arrival).

STEP THREE

  • Mail or deliver all documents to NYUS.

    • A friend/relative in the U.S. may also deliver them in person.

  • Once approved, NYUS will issue:

    • Acceptance Letter

    • Form I-20 (mailed or collected from campus).

  • After receiving your I-20:

    • Sign and date it.

    • Pay the SEVIS I-901 Fee ($200 USD).

  • Schedule an appointment at the nearest U.S. Embassy/Consulate to complete your visa interview and receive your F-1 Student Visa.
